The New FAA Administrator
.) According to Bloomberg.com, "John Dunkin has been working for Donald Trump since 1989". . He has managed Trump's private aircraft for that entire length of time. He was also an executive at Trump's short-lived Trump Shuttle Airline.
.) There are several other candidates that are up for election as the new FAA Administrator. Some of those candidates are Daniel Elwell, who as also the current acting Administrator, and Samuel Graves. On top of being the current administrator, Elwell was a former Air Force pilot that also served with the FAA from 2006-2008. Samuel Graves is a Missouri Republican that is trying to head the Transportation and contruction Committee the following year (Levin et al, 2018).
.) One former FAA Administrator, Robert Sturgell, was a former Navy pilot who was acting FAA administrator from 2007-2009 and is now a senior vice president at Rockwell Collins Inc. Another former FAA Administrator, Marion Blakely, was the former NTSB Chairwoman and worked on several accidents including American Airlines Flight 587.
.) According to the FAA's website, the current FAA administrator, Daniel Elwell, "is responsible for the safety and efficiency of the largest aerospace system in the world — a system that operates more than 50,000 flights per day. He oversees a $16.4 billion-dollar budget, more than 47,000 employees, and is focused on ensuring the agency and its employees are the best prepared and trained professionals to meet the growing demands and requirements of the industry. Mr. Elwell also oversees the FAA's multibillion-dollar NextGen air traffic control modernization program as the U.S. shifts from ground-based radar to state-of-the-art satellite technology".
.) I feel as though it matter greatly who the FAA Administrator is. They are responsible for overseeing the entire budget of the FAA. This means that they have a large say in where that money can go. Depending on their backround, this can affect how other sectors of aviation conduct themselves. Some departments may get more or less money than they need because the Administrator is knowledgeable or not on certain matters.
